Highlights

Los Angeles offers a very wide range of things to do, with its strongest draws concentrated around film history, museums, beaches, live sports, music, theater, parks, and a packed calendar of annual events. The city’s highlights are spread across many districts and nearby communities, so a good visit often mixes famous landmarks like Hollywood and Griffith Park with coastal areas, major venues Downtown, and destination museums across the Westside and beyond.

See
Hollywood and studio culture
filmlandmarksstudios
Hollywood remains the city’s most recognizable sightseeing area, with landmarks tied to film history such as Grauman's Chinese Theater, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the Hollywood Sign. The broader entertainment landscape is also scattered across nearby studio hubs like Universal City, Burbank, Culver City, and Century City, where major studios and production facilities still operate and some even offer tours or tapings.
Historic Los Angeles
historyarchitecturedistricts
Los Angeles has preserved a surprising number of historical places despite its reputation for constant reinvention. El Pueblo de Los Angeles, the city’s original Spanish settlement, still anchors the story of its founding, while Downtown’s Historic Core, Union Station, the Bradbury Building, the Mission San Gabriel, and the Mission San Fernando show different eras of the region’s development. The mix of architecture, museums, and living-history sites makes this a strong category for understanding the city’s past.
Museums and art collections
museumsartscience
The city has several major museums that stand out nationally, especially the Getty Center with its hilltop views and European art, the Getty Villa for ancient Greek and Roman artifacts, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art with its wide-ranging global collection. Downtown also concentrates important contemporary art institutions such as MOCA and The Broad, while Exposition Park, Wilshire, and other districts add science, history, and specialty museums to the mix.
Parks, viewpoints, and scenery
outdoorsviewsparks
Los Angeles has a remarkable amount of scenery for an urban area, from huge Griffith Park and its trails, observatory, zoo, and city views to neighborhood parks like Echo Park and MacArthur Park. Other notable outlooks include Mulholland Drive, Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook, Malibu’s coast, Palos Verdes cliffs, botanical gardens in the valleys, and the Angeles National Forest, giving visitors many ways to see both the basin and the surrounding mountains and ocean.
Do
Beaches and coastal activities
beachescoastoutdoors
Beach life is one of the city’s defining experiences, with famous stretches such as Venice Beach and Santa Monica offering boardwalk energy, piers, amusements, and very busy summer crowds. More relaxed options include Dockweiler, while Pacific Palisades and Malibu provide scenic shoreline and surf, and the South Bay adds popular beach cities with piers, family-friendly sand, and active sports scenes. Marina del Rey also stands out for boating rather than swimming.
Live sports
sportsstadiumsteams
Los Angeles is one of the country’s major sports cities, with a long list of teams and venues spread across the region. You can catch the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium, the Lakers, Kings, Sparks, and many concerts at Crypto.com Arena, the Rams and Chargers at SoFi Stadium, LAFC and Angel City FC at BMO Stadium, or college football at the Coliseum and Rose Bowl. The area also supports several other pro and college programs nearby.
Music venues and nightlife
musicconcertsnightlife
The city’s music scene spans nearly every style, from rock venues on Sunset Boulevard and Hollywood clubs to classical performances Downtown and major concert halls like the Walt Disney Concert Hall and Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Venues such as the Hollywood Bowl, Greek Theatre, Troubadour, Whisky a Go Go, The Wiltern, and The Forum show how varied the live-music calendar can be, while record stores and underground spaces add another layer to the scene.
Comedy and theater
theatercomedyperforming-arts
Los Angeles is a major center for both comedy and live theater, with a dense concentration of clubs and stage venues. West Hollywood’s Comedy Store and Laugh Factory, Hollywood’s Upright Citizens Brigade, and Fairfax venues like The Improv and The Groundlings are important for stand-up and improv, while Downtown’s theater district, the Music Center, the Pantages Theatre, the Ford Theatre, and Geffen Playhouse give the city a broad and active performance landscape.
Annual events and festivals
eventsfestivalsseasonal
The city’s event calendar is packed through the year, making timing a major part of the visit. Highlights include the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, Chinese New Year in Chinatown, the L.A. Marathon, Fiesta Broadway, Pride Week in West Hollywood, Anime Expo, the Hollywood Bowl’s Fourth of July fireworks, the Los Angeles County Fair, the Hollywood Christmas Parade, and holiday boat and music celebrations, all of which show how large and varied the region’s public events are.
Tips
  • Many attractions are spread across distinct districts, so planning by neighborhood helps a lot.
  • Several major museums, parks, beaches, and venues are outside central Los Angeles but still part of the broader visitor experience.
  • If you want film-related sightseeing, Hollywood is only one part of the story; studios, classic theaters, and celebrity-linked sites are also found in other areas.
  • For beaches and ocean scenery, the Westside and South Bay offer different atmospheres, from lively and iconic to more relaxed and scenic.
